Features & Reviews
Phone : The W200i brings the massively successful Walkman range of phones within reach of the budget consumer for the first time. Available in black or white, the W200i is a lightweight phone with a classic design, similar to its big brother, the high-end W810i. The W200i has a neat keypad with good-sized keys, although it does use a joystick instead of a navigation key, which we would have preferred. The W200i offers a lot for your money: a camera, a music player, an FM radio, Java games and expandable memory, and looks set to be a winner |
Size : The model comes in two colors – Pulse White and Rhythm Black, and design-wise is pretty much like a simplified version of the W800i and the K750i respectively. The light-colored W200i sports ivory-painted front and rear plates, while the casing is edged by an orange string. The darker edition of the handset though is made entirely of black plastic, saving for Walkman logos, dedicated player button and the joystick’s rim, which are all orange. In terms of dimensions the newcomer’s casing is akin to what we experienced with its “big brothers”: the W200i’s 101x44x18 mm compared to 100x46x20.5 mm put up by the W800i. Sony Ericsson W200i gets a bit narrower on the back panel, but it still manages to fit in hands well. The device weights 85 g. |
Display : The handset is highly useable & comes with a large brightly coloured screen which has a screen resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. |
Camera : The bundled camera sports a resolution of 640x480 pixels and 4x zoom feature, plus an ability to record small video clips (in 3gp with a resolution of up to 176x144 pixels). While the settings pool here is poor, it is what you would normally come to expect from a camera this cheap. |
Battery : Standard battery, Li-Ion |
Multimedia : The music player is based on the excellent Walkman player found in Sony Ericsson's top-of-the-range handsets, such as the W810i. This is a fully featured music player that can handle playlists and is very easy to use. It incorporates Sony Ericsson's MegaBass™ feature that boosts the bass tones in your music. The audio quality is excellent, especially with the stereo headset supplied. The PlayNow™ feature enables you to browse and download top-selling premium ringtones on your phone (you have to pay for any ringtones that you download). In addition to the music player, there's also a useful built-in FM radio. The W200i is supplied with a stereo handsfree headset, a 128 Mbyte memory card (enough to store around 32 songs) and software for ripping music from CD's and transferring music from your PC to your phone. You can expand the memory to a maximum of 2 Gybtes by buying a larger memory card (Memory Stick Micro™ format). It's easy to transfer music from your PC to your phone using the USB connection, which supports drag-and-drop data transfer. Likewise, transferring photos or videos from your phone back to your PC is straightforward. The W200i also supports an infrared connection, but not Bluetooth - with a phone this cheap there have to be some compromises! |
Memory : W200i has a hot swap memory card slot for M2. The card slot is perfectly organized as there seem to be no problem using it. The phone package comes with 128mb memory and you know that is simply not sufficient to hold anything more than 2 of your favorite full albums. The phone supports upto a max of 1GB of memory if you want to have it |
Networking : W200i is a Triband GSM phone supporting 3 Bands (GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900). You can surf the net using the Class 10 GPRS connection which can deliver speeds of 32 - 48 kbps. Unfortunately there is no Bluetooth. Thanks to the ancient IRDA for transferring data like ringtones and photos wirelessly from your friend’s phones. You can connect the phone using the supplied USB data cable. Like any other Sony Ericsson mobiles, w200i also has two modes for transfer between the handset and PC. The phone mode requires the bundled software to be installed in the pc. Other one is the Transfer File mode, which lets you use the phone as mass storage device and doesn’t require any software or drivers to be installed. |
