Features & Reviews

Phone : The N70 takes the Nseries into the mainstream. Essentially, it’s a trumped up version of the popular 6680, closely imitating its design. Anyone who has just purchased a 6680 might want to look away now because the N70 is far superior despite being just a slight upgrade in terms of specs. Of course you may have to pay a little extra for the N70’s services but then Nokia’s Nseries is all about raising your mobile game. Place the N70 next to the 6680 and you immediately spot the difference in craftsmanship. While the two handsets’ dimensions are identical, the N70 appears more streamlined due to wonderful design definition and high-grade materials. The N70’s keypad also looks reduced and cramped but in practice remains convenient to operate. One addition to the controls is a multimedia key that can be customised to activate any function |
Size : Physically the N70 is similar in appearance to the Nokia 6680, with a conventional boxy shape and a functional (but small) keypad with a five-way scroll key, two soft keys, an application key, and a multimedia key. The N70 is slightly thicker than the 6680, but lighter. At 109 x 53 x 24 mm and 126 g, it's now not only compact but also a pleasure to behold with its classy looks and stainless steel bezel surrounding the screen and keypad. |
Display : The N70 comes with a colourful & clear 262k colour screen which provides a 176 x 208 pixel screen resolution. Users are certain to appreciate the adjustable brightness which ranges from pitiful to torching, and an ambient light sensor provides the finishing touch. |
Camera : 2 MP, 1600x1200 pixels, video, flash; secondary video call VGA camera. The quality of the Nokia N90's and Sony Ericsson k750i's cameras is very similar and that caused endless arguments of the fans solving the question which device is better - the Nokia N90 or Sony Ericsson k750i. So, people are ready to defend their position for days devising advantages and disadvantages of this or that phone on the forums. Photos taken with the Nokia N70 are a bit worse than with the Nokia N90 and Sony Ericsson k750i due to the absence of autofocus and a normal macromode correspondingly. However the N70 looses only to the N-series smartphones and no other even indirect rival can compare with it in the camera quality. Nokia takes firm positions here |
Battery : Battery life is respectable if not stunning by Nokias standards, the Lithium Ion battery will keep you mobile for around 12 days and a smaller than expected talk time of just 3 hours. A shock was that Nokia have changed their charger socket, for as long as we can remember all Nokia phones have used the same plug and so someone always has a Nokia charger! But not for the N70 the socket is slimmer and while there is of course a charge provided, none of your old Nokia chargers will work |
Multimedia : The phone comes with good sound quality which can be heard & enjoyed on the integrated FM radio or RealPlayer media player. The N70 comes with true tone & polyphonic ringtones. The visual radio feature allows the user to see as well as hear their favourite radio station. The phone comes with very simple to operate voice features which include voice recording, voice dialling & voice commands. |
Memory : The most important advantage of the N70 is the amount of RAM memory. RAM is the operating memory used for program execution. The simple rule is: the more, the better. Previous Series 60 smartphones suffered from very small amount of RAM available for 3rd party applications, usually less than 8 MB, with the only exceptions being the N-Gage series offering about 11 MB of free RAM memory and the new N90 having almost 21 MB free RAM. If you have more operating memory you can not only use more applications at the same time but you can also run more advanced software, open larger documents, bigger pictures, use more detailed maps in a GPS navigation program and so on. The great news is that N70 has..... 32 MB of free RAM, the most used in a Symbian OS device so far; even Nokia 9500 Communicator has less! The N70 also has 20 MB of internal storage memory (Flash memory, disk C:) and allows storage expansion using DV RS-MMC cards (64 megabyte card with pre-installed software is included with the phone). The CPU speed is the same as of 6630, 6680 and N90 - 220 MHz - and it's the fastest CPU used in Symbian OS smartphones up to date. The overall performance of the N70 seems to be the same as of 6680, with the exception that you can now run much more concurrent applications and quickly switch between them. |
Networking : The Nokia N70 automatically connects to the 3G (UMTS/WCDMA) network when it can detect one and remains connected to the GSM/GPRS network when there's no 3G network around. The 2G technology on the phone provides connectivity to GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 network bands. |
Games : Card Deck, Snakes and 3D Snowboard. |
performance : Overall the Nokia N70 feels very much like a kevved up version of the 6680 and that's probably because its just what it is. Sure its a bit lighter and has a good camera and some other extras but fundamentally its still a bit of a slab and fells like it is playing at things other Nokia models do better. Its not as good as the N90 for imaging or the N91 for audio replay and then when you see the N80 is coming with all these features a 3.0 mega pixel camera and WiFi the N70 starts to look like a stop gap. |
Special Feature : An extensive set of software is included: Internet browser, email, office document viewers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF), calendar, image printing, among others. By definition, a smartphone is a mobile phone that (usually) looks like a phone, but can double as a digital camera, music player, email device, diet monitor, navigation device, or whatever applications you decide to download to the device. The Nokia N70 is exactly as described: it has practically all the features a modern phone can have. Nokia continues to use the Symbian OS operating system and the S60 software in its smartphones and along with the included applications, it is a powerful and user-friendly combination. |
